When I watch the news, sometimes it feels like I’ve heard this story before. Here are five movies that resonate with me in the Trump Era.
The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
A neo-noir political thriller that was supposedly removed from distribution after the 1963 assassination of President Kennedy, this film supposes what would happen if sleeper agents infiltrated American politics. Angela Landsbury is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING in the film and you must stop whatever you are doing and watch this film for her. Oh, and Frank Sinatra is in it. BUT ANGELA LANSBURY IS A QUEEN.
The Manchurian Candidate is available on iTunes and Prime.
Idiocracy (2006)
What if an average guy takes part in a military experiment and is put into hibernation until 2505 only to find out he is the smartest person left on earth? Some folks say we’re already living this movie.
Idiocracy is available on Hulu, iTunes, YouTube, Prime.
Citizen Kane (1941)
I just rewatched Citizen Kane a few weeks ago. I know it’s not revolutionary to say that it’s the best movie ever, but honestly, it might be. If you haven’t seen it, please just do yourself a favor and watch it. You will understand it far better than Trump, who also ranks this film as his favorite, but YOU CAN NOT CONVINCE ME THAT HE’S EVER SEEN IT.
Citizen Kane is available on YouTube, Prime, iTunes.
All The President’s Men (1976)
This is as relevant as the day it was released. I imagine this is what’s going on in Rachel Maddow’s office on a regular basis. Remember back in the day when she used to make cocktails on Fridays? Yeah. The Trump Era even ruined that. Sorry. I got off track. This movie is great.
All the President’s Men is available on YouTube, Prime, iTunes.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)
There is too much talk of men (only) in politics in this film, but considering the time, I guess they didn’t know better. So, that aside, this movie is the American dream of politics. The Washington we wish we had, especially since we’re stuck in the Trump Era. A faded dream. Patriotic, melodramatic. A political innocent goes to Washington and deals with corruption and the ugly side of politics.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is available on Prime and iTunes.
